The embodiment of the power of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, she rides a bull and carries a trident and a lotus in her two hands. In the previous birth, she was the daughter of Daksha, Sati. Once Daksha had organized a big Yagna. He did not invite Shiva. But Sati being obstinate, reached there. By seeing her, Daksha started insulting Lord Shiva. Sati could not tolerate the insult of the husband. So she burnt herself in the fire of Yagna.

Goddess Shailputri is the first form of NavaDurga and worshipped on the first day of Navratri. She is also called Bhavani, Parvati, or Hemavati. Mata Shailputri is the true reincarnation of Goddess Sati. In Sanskrit, Shaila means the mountain, and Putri means the daughter, so she is named Shailputri – the daughter of mountains. Goddess Shailaputri is considered the supreme form of Mother Nature. She is known to be the earthly essence. Goddess Shailputri has a half-moon on her forehead and holds a trident in her right hand & a lotus flower in her left hand. The Goddess is seated on Nandi (the bull).
In other birth, she became the daughter of King Himavat – Lord of the great Himalaya. Being the daughter of the King of Himalaya, she was known as Shailputri. Doing hard penance, she was able to please Lord Shiva and got married to him.
Significance
The provider of all fortunes – the Moon is governed by Goddess Shailputri. So, one can overcome any effects of the Moon by worshipping her. Her abode is in the Muladhara Chakra. The divine energy is latent in every human being. The Tattva (element) is Earth, with the Guna (quality) of coherence and with the Bheda (distinct) characteristics of Gharana(the smell). As per Upanishad, she reduced the egotism of Indra and the other Devtas. Being ashamed, they bowed and prayed that, “In fact, thou are Shakti, we all – Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva are capable of getting Shakti from you.” Thus, Shailaputri is considered the manifestation of the power of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva.

Shailputri Puja
Goddess Shailputri Puja is observed on the first day of the Navratri celebration. The puja begins with Ghatasthapana – a ritual that symbolizes the power of women. Ghatasthapana is performed on the 1st day of Navratri and is considered the most significant ritual of Navratri.
The Ghatasthapana puja performs by using puja items that are considered holy and symbolic. Use a shallow pan-like utensil made of clay as the base. Three layers of mud and then scatter Sapta Dhanya/Navadhanya seeds in the pan. After that little bit of water is needed to be sprinkled so that the seeds get enough moisture. Then, Fill a Kalasha with Ganga Jal. Supari, a few coins, Akshat (raw rice mixed with turmeric powder), and Durva grass put in water. After this, put five leaves of the mango tree around the neck of the Kalash and then cover it by placing a coconut.
Maa Durga is both a destroyer and a creator. She symbolizes that what we think is the end is just the beginning of something new.
